Fresh out of Indie company Galope’s oven, we have a new side-scrolling adventure called Ravva and the Cyclops Curse. Ravva is about an owl wizard that must rescue his mother from the clutches of the evil Cyclops that has cast a curse on her.
I wonder where else I’ve heard this before? In gameplay, you have a total of four friends (magical beings) to help barge your way through supposedly intangible obstacles, kill the bad guys, freeze spikes, and reveal hidden treasures. The controls are pretty straightforward and easy to use. I managed to die a few times in the tutorial, mostly because I’ve never played a side-scrolling game before, but this shouldn’t deter you.I loved the graphics and screen wipes which were reminiscent of classic NES games. The animation, though simple 8-bit, was excellent and the patterns and colors are definitely immersive. I liked the detail in the graphics; the pixels didn’t look blurred or like a mosaic of color, common with NES games from 1985. There is a sense of familiarity from past, such as the high score system, the map that tracks your progress to the Big Bad’s house, and, of course, tons of collectables. The limited color palette definitely adds to the art style of the game and further immerses you into the feel of the NES circa 1985.
Jan 19, 2019 Go retro with Ravva and the Cyclops Curse, a title that recalls the look and play of NES-era games and build bit-mapped platformers with PlataGO!, a toolset that permits players to build their own run-and-jumps. Ravva and the Cyclops Curse, Galope, $2.99, currently $2.54. By now, most players are familiar with the Metroidvania genre.
As an ex-animator, I am thoroughly impressed with the animation, specifically in this sequence. In this sequence, the animation does briefly step out of its jumpy art style to show off a few animation moves from the developers. You can definitely see the elasticity and tangibility of the Cyclops character, compared to our hero Ravva. The graphics and art style definitely gives the game personality compared to other NES games. The upbeat music definitely gets you to start jamming quietly to yourself as you play. Despite the catchy tunes, I noticed the music would restart itself each time you unpaused the game. This is a minor discrepancy that you can easily look past.
The soundtrack is reminiscent of other established NES games and will bring you in for a nostalgic ride into the days of the NES.The narrative and general layout of Ravva and the Cyclops Curse reminded me of a number of games where you had to chase bad guys, level up, and ultimately, rescue the damsel in distress. Games like this include Donkey Kong, Zelda, Mario, Adventures of Lolo and that follow this same formula.Ravva and the Cyclops Curse rates highly because of the high quality of sound, graphics, controls, and animations.
If you are a huge fan of NES styled side-scrollers, I would definitely go and give this a play. The narrative is nothing groundbreaking, but the mechanics are familiar and comfortable. The graphics and art design definitely rescue the game from being just another NES offspring.Ravva and the Cyclops Curse will be released on January 16th, 2019.
